* * * *

Gil turned over, blinking his eyes at the bright morning sun. He couldn’t believe that he’d actually gotten a full night’s sleep. He and Domingo had run last night until Gil couldn’t do it anymore. His body had gone limp, his mind numb from exhaustion.

Now Gil felt like he could take on the world. Maybe not the entire world, but a small piece of it.

He turned his head to see Domingo fast asleep beside him. Gil eased out of the guy’s clutching grip as quietly as he could. Domingo grunted and then rolled to his back. Satisfied that Domingo wouldn’t wake up, Gil headed for a nearby bush. He whistled as he relieved himself, gazing around at what the morning light revealed.

It was going to be a beautiful day. Gil could feel it in his bones. How could anything bad happen when the sun was filtering through the trees and the birds were singing to him? When he was finished taking care of his business, Gil pounced on Domingo, laughing. “Wake up, sleepyhead. I want to get an early start to wherever it is you’re taking me.”

Domingo murmured something about burying Gil under a porch before his eyes slowly opened. Gil loved looking at the man’s crystal-brown eyes. They were simply gorgeous. “Hi.”

“You could get shot waking a man from his sleep.” Domingo turned over and Gil nearly hit the ground, but the man was quick, grabbing Gil and holding him close. “Go back to sleep, troublemaker.”

Gil reached up and lifted one of Domingo’s eyelids. “Come on, get up.”

“Will you stop?” Domingo snapped, his eyes never opening.

Gil shoved his hands into Domingo’s chest, dislodging himself. He got to his feet, glaring down at the sleeping man. “Grouch.”

Domingo turned over, giving Gil his back. “Will you just shut up for five seconds so I can get some sleep?” Domingo closed his eyes and muttered, “Burden.”

Gil felt his heart break at the idea that Domingo thought him a burden. He started walking through the forest, hoping to find a road before another wild animal surfaced. Fuck Domingo. Gil didn’t need the man anyway. The guy was holding Gil back from having real fun. Domingo was always too cautious. Gil wanted to live life on the edge.

He didn’t want any restraints.

But the longer he walked, the more he missed Domingo.

No, you don’t need him.

Gil shoved the depressing feeling aside and continued to walk. He found a road and decided to take it. Gil traveled for the rest of the day, only seeing a few cars on the road. Every time one came near, Gil hid in the woods. He wanted adventure, not to be kidnapped again.

By nightfall, Gil was exhausted. He was also pissed that Domingo hadn’t come after him. Even though Gil had denied needing the man, the rejection still hurt. He paused in his walking when he heard loud voices. Gil shot into the woods and followed the tree line until he spotted the source of the noise.

It was a bar.
